What is your price?
Is there commercial work you would refuse?
If a job came in with fees of 50k, would you refuse to do the job if it was for cigarettes? Liquor? The Democratic Party?

First, it’s about profit margin not fees.
Next, no I would not BUT I am unique as I am retired and do not need to feed and clothe others that depend on me. When that is the case, people have to do what they have to do.
NEXT, here is the MUCH more important question that should be asked:
“What are you doing to donate your skills back to someone that needs it”
It’s easy to say “NO” to the above question when we don’t have it in front of us, but why not ask what someone actually did that REALLY shows their position? Did they Shoot for free, pro bono, for an anti-smoking Ad, Condoms, Child-abuse” Etc….
Food for thought and very good blog you have.

Tom, yes, I agree that donating your skills and time to a worthy cause is important. This is a great way to do your most creative work!

I make a division between my work and hired work. Things that I create on my own time are not for sale, i don’t want to start thinking about how to sell or make money out of that stuff- i want to operate totally unencumbered and allow myself to fail or succeed without consequence. On the other side I am a hired gun and I’ll shoot anything you pay for, I would shoot ads in favor of murder for the same rate as anything else

Every man’s gotta have a code to live by. From the beginning, I’ve decided that I would never photograph anything for the tobacco industry – no matter how much it pays. Being that I strive to make compelling imagery, I’d hate to be the one compelling someone to smoke. Alcohol, on the other hand… I’ll shoot booze ads any day of the week! Especially if they’re paying me in liquor!

Hey David. Why do you distinguish between cigarettes and alcohol? I’m sure you have a reason, I’m just curious.

Because alcohol is tasty! Seriously though… I feel there is a distinction between the two. Alcohol is intended to be enjoyed responsibly and is actually good for your health in small doses. A glass of wine with a meal, a beer after a long hard days work, etc. On the other hand, tobacco is proven to be deadly. Not only does it cause a plethora of health conditions for the user, it also hurts bystanders who inhale the 2nd hand smoke. I’m just not a fan of being paid in blood money.

I totally agree with that view.
