New Photographer Monday: Ackerman Gruber
Ackerman Gruber Images is the husband and wife team of Jenn Ackerman and Tim Gruber. Trained as photojournalists, they now work in both video and stills, and have built a career that includes both editorial work and commercial documentary work. Tim and Jenn sent me a link to their latest commercial work, a behind-the-scenes look at the Miss USA and Miss Universe beauty pageants, in response to my blog post asking for links to new work to show American Photo (please keep sending it in). On their website you will also find Tim’s riveting self-funded project, Served Out: Aging and Dying Behind Bars, documenting elderly prison inmates, and Jenn’s Emmy-award winning work Trapped: Mental Illness in America’s Prisons. The incredible thing is that they bring much the same perspective to their beauty pageant work as to the prison work. You can read more about how they market and build their business here, and here, as well as on their blog. Below are images from Behind the Crown: Chasing the Title of Miss, their work for the beauty pageants, including one of the short films they produced as part of the gig.

Hey Greg! So I don’t know if you heard but I am working at the Maine Media Workshops this summer and Jenn Ackerman taught a class last week!
She spoke one of the nights she was here. If you haven’t seen it watch her video called ‘Trapped’, it’s very inspiring. Her work is beautiful and strong!
