Is Usage an Anachronism?

Last night, Greg and I were discussing the future of usage rights, after I read his latest blog post about PDN’s article on what ad agencies are looking for these days (unlimited usage, low prices – i.e. the RF model for commission shoots). Then this afternoon I read Rob’s interview with Mariano Pastor about his new pricing model, which is based on the time it takes him to make the image, not its end use.

    Interesting paradigm. Definitely some parts of it make sense to me. But even if you shift to viewing yourself as an hourly laborer, it still makes sense to charge differently for different clients. Do you think Anderson charges the same fee for his appearance regardless of who it’s for? I doubt it.
