Help Wanted: Cruise Ship Photographer

Does thinking about the job title Cruise Ship Photographer start a gag reaction in the back of your throat? If it does, let me give you some basics that I found out from a good source over a glass of wine a few nights ago:

* According to my source, the manager of the cruise ship photographers was making about $8,000. a month. I do not know what the photographers themselves make, but my sense was the sums were also something to write home about.

* Cruise ship companies are usually based somewhere so that employees receive their paychecks with NO TAXES taken out of their checks.

I find it funny to see this post. My family recently went on a cruise and brought back an email address of one of the photographers they were talking to. I was looking into just a few days ago. It sounds like it could/would be a lot of fun, hard work, but still fun. It’s one of my options that I am keeping open as of right now.

I’m 21, graduating soon and would love to travel and photograph. I’m sure I could get some awesome portfolio shots on the side. Is this a hypothetical situation, or do you know anyone that is hiring/looking?

Hi Jake, I started to do a little digging and found some “Cruise Ship Employment” websites, but I’m not sure how legit they are. If I were you, I would call the Human Resources Departments of the big cruise ship lines. I would guess they all have some kind of office in Miami. I would also compare the living conditions and treatment of the crew for each line: i.e. How many days do you work, and how many days do you get to take off work in a month? Then, start a blog and tell us about it! The numbers I got are for salary + commission. According to my source, you must be good at sales to do well and your work ethic must be outstanding! This job is not for low energy photographers. Good luck!

People people…get with it! This is a scam, HELLO! You do NOT make in close to that much as a cruise photog. It pays between 1400 and 2200 a month for a beginner depending on the company. Most cruise lines hire from outside companies that staff and there are only a few so it’s easy to find the info on a proper google search. Image is the largest hiring outfit so check them out. You will work 7 days a week with NO days off ever! Keep that in mind and by all means please avoid these scam artists!

  • greg says:

Even if you make $1400 to $2200, that is still “Tax Free” money, and not bad for a recent photo school graduate. How many graduates could the photo industry possibly absorb? Yes, I figured you would work really hard and probably be taken advantage of, and I’m not suggesting it’s easy, but it’s a tax free job with room and board. Also note, I am not hiring for this job, this is merely for discussion.

As far as young graduates being taken advantage of…. there are numerous instances of this happening at the highest levels of the industry by the most professional of photographers.
