Chris Anderson on Wired hiring photographers

Tonight I attended a lecture by Chris Anderson, Editor in Chief of Wired Magazine. Most of the lecture was about his new book, From Atoms to Bits. However, during Q & A, a question was asked about how the new Wired app for the iPad is affecting how Wired is hiring photographers. Anderson said that photo shoots were taking much longer, sometimes all day instead of a few hours, because Wired now needs many more images to make 3-D modeling possible. They also need photographers to shoot a video component.

Photographers want to charge more, but we don’t want to pay more.

We’re choosing to work with photographers who will work with us now and hopefully get to scale later.

Anderson also noted that at Wired, they have had to come up with entire new contracts for photographers.
