11 images make a final photograph

Here is an example from our latest resort shoot where 11 images were combined to make the final image. We aren’t finished with the final yet, but this is one new way to produce images…. keep the camera on a tripod and make an exposure for each area of the image that will be used [...]

Shooting Stills and Video at the same time is tricky

I just got finished with a shoot at a resort in the Outer Banks of NC. The idea going into the shoot was to set up for stills and “b-roll” video at the same time. If we light the interiors with hot lights balanced for daylight, I reasoned, then we could shoot stills and video [...]

Fed-X let me down!

For the first time in my career, Fed-X didn’t deliver and did not even call me to tell me that the package went to the wrong airport! I had to call them and spend 30 minutes asking them questions about where my package was….
No gyro for the helicopter!

Been Shooting at a Resort all week….

I’ve been shooting at a resort all week… and haven’t had any time to blog with 4:45AM call times and finishing at 10PM.

Airplane Completion Photography

I’ve been shooting corporate jets lately. Here is a link to another photographer that does the same work and
an article in the Washington Post. It’s cool work, but it’s hard to get. It’s just like everything else, clients want to see the work in your book before the hire you to do it.

Sell, Sell, Sell…

These last couple of jobs that have come in, I’ve been working on selling my ability to do jobs for mid-size companies. To be perfectly honest, this is really amazing, because I get to talk to the client, the marketing and PR person for the company, directly.
I am now coming to understand that [...]

Big Companies, Relationships, Local Jobs

There’s something magical about hanging out with people in the industry in a mid-size town. First of all, there aren’t many photographers who have the gear and can do the entire job from pre to post, so you’re going to get the call; meaning, at some point your name is going to be mentioned. Second [...]

Photographer in Little Rock, Dero, shoots variety, makes $$$

In class last week, one of my students interviewed photographer, Dero Sanford. One quick look at Dero’s website reveals that he is shooting a variety of subject matter and making a go of it in a smaller market. He shoots national advertising campaigns, PSA’s, editorial jobs and weddings. And, yes, video has become part of [...]
