Attention Wedding Photographers: Brides want Facebook Video of their Wedding
In a conversation I had today with a successful New York City wedding photographer, she mentioned that brides are a lot more interested in video now that they can post it to their Facebook page. With wedding guests now shooting Flip Videos, brides are starting to think of video as a cheap add-on that a photographer can do on the side – just shoot a little something, edit it in iMovie, and upload – what’s the big deal?
Professional videographers charge thousands of dollars for full coverage and often cost more than the photographer.

Greg, I completely agree. It seems that the wedding photography market is leaning more towards immediacy. They want the quality canvas prints to display for years to come, but at the same time they want to maintain the excitement and giddiness by sharing with all their friends on Facebook. The idea I have been kicking around is not as much using a second/third assistant, but why not get a video perspective of what the photographer is shooting? By using a off-camera flash rig mount and screw in a FlipCam instead of a flash for the outdoor work (because the Flips work better in abundant light anyways), you can get twice the work done at the same time and then mash it together for a quick 2 minute teaser trailer they can post within 24 hours after their wedding. Before they even leave for the airport, they could have that on their FB page (FB now does 720p), you bookend it with your site URL, they’re happy, you’re marketing…all parties win!

That is a great idea. I am not sure that I would want to give up shooting with fill flash outside. Maybe I could use fill flash on the hot-shoe and the flip phone rig on a flash bracket as you suggest. I’m such a perfectionist that I think it would take me longer than a few hours to go through and edit all that footage into a FB piece for the newlyweds. I’d have to work on that! Have you tried this yet? I’d love to see your efforts if/when you do. One other thought: with the Canon 5D MK II, while shooting video, you can take still images. It would interrupt the video, but who cares if you are editing later. I wonder how that would work?
