Abductions of young photographers on the rise!

This morning, about 3 AM, I was awoken by another Art Buyer on my lawn.

I call it “phonaphobia” and I just don’t get it. I think texting is absolutely wonderful for things like, “hey darling, will you stop and get milk on the way home?” or “stuck in traffic. Running ten minutes late.” or, “OMG this Business Practices lecture is sooooo boring.” But not for business.

I’m finding that on my small market photo shoots, I’m arriving on set with I inadequate information with which to begin the shoot in a timely manner. Why? Because it’s rare I can get anybody to have an in-depth phone conversation. Email is a poor substitute for what should be a phone call (or better yet a pre-production meeting – but pre-production budgets are another story.)

BUT… my favorite pet peeve is when I return home late at night from an out-of-town photo shoot and I have three emails – all from the same designer/AD/client…
9:00 a.m./Email #1: Hey here’s a list of the files we need and we need them by tonight.
1:00 p.m./Email #2: Haven’t heard from you – just wondering if you got my earlier email.
4:30 p.m./Email #3: We REALLY need those files… were you able to upload them???

As a young photographer who only recently put my mailing address online, I had a number of reasons. The first is that as a female living alone, you are given the advice over and over to make sure that people can’t find where you live. And to some degree, there may be validity in that. I worked the haunted pub-crawls in downtown Savannah for over a year while in school, handing out cards to anyone who was interested.(You’ve got to love a captive audience for promoting yourself.) I didn’t put my address on my card because I didn’t want any inebriated tourists to think that the card was an invitation for anything other than a quote for photographic services and show up at my front door.

The bigger reason that I had for not including my address is that as a student and fresh-from-school photographer, I’ve had to move A LOT. I’ve had six addresses in the last five years. Replacing business cards that often is just not feasible.

I will say that since putting my address out on the web, no crazy photo-abductors have come calling…but then again, I have a really big dog. :)

You might also mention to them that their blogs/websites should link to each other…
